Should Children with Rhinitis Regularly Wash Their Noses

In daily life, it is common to encounter parents asking whether their children with rhinitis should regularly wash their noses.

While nose washing generally has no harm, if the child does not have any nasal symptoms, allergies, or discomfort, there is no need to wash their nose daily.

When is it necessary to use saline solution to wash the nose?

If the child has a cold or is experiencing a rhinitis flare-up, leading to symptoms like nasal congestion or other nasal discomforts, using saline solution to wash the nose can be beneficial. It can clean nasal secretions, effectively relieve nasal congestion, and aid in alleviating the symptoms of the cold or rhinitis.

During allergy seasons, if your child is allergic, even if they currently show no symptoms, you can use saline solution to wash their nose daily. This can help prevent the onset of sinusitis and reduce postnasal drip symptoms caused by allergies and colds. During dry seasons, nasal irrigation can help keep the child's nasal passages moist.

What is saline solution?

Standard saline solution has a concentration of 0.9%, which means it contains 9 grams of sodium chloride per liter of water. Saline solution is a mixture of salt and water, with a salt concentration similar to that of tears, blood, and other body fluids (0.9% saline). Saline solution is also known as an isotonic solution.
