How to Care for Your Child After Tonsillectomy Surgery?

What is a Tonsillectomy?

A tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgeries performed on children and teenagers. Tonsils are two tissue masses located at the back of the throat, one on each side. As part of the immune system, tonsils help the body identify and fight off various bacteria that enter the body.

When is a Tonsillectomy Needed?

Consider a tonsillectomy for your child if they experience the following:

  • At least 7 episodes of tonsillitis in one year
  • At least 5 episodes per year for two consecutive years
  • At least 3 episodes per year for three consecutive years

Additionally, if tonsillitis causes the following symptoms, surgery may be necessary:

  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Abscesses that do not improve with antibiotic treatment

How Long is the Recovery Period ?

Most tonsillectomies are outpatient procedures that typically take about 30 minutes to complete, allowing the child to go home the same day. Full recovery usually takes 7 to 14 days.

How to Care for Your Child After Surgery?

After the surgery, your child may need to rest at home for a week and avoid strenuous activities for two weeks. During the recovery period, watch for signs of blood clots or vomiting blood, and provide a diet of liquids and soft foods. Most children recover without major issues, but if you notice symptoms such as fever, nausea, diarrhea, bad breath, difficulty breathing, or rash, contact your doctor immediately.
