Childhood Asthma And Food Triggers

In recent decades, the incidence of asthma has been on the rise, with some research suggesting a link to changes in diet. An increase in processed food consumption and a decrease in the intake of vegetables and fruits may be contributing factors. Some studies have found that individuals with higher dietary intake of vitamin C, vitamin E, carotenoids, flavonoids, magnesium, selenium, and omega-3 fatty acids have a lower incidence of asthma. These foods' antioxidants can protect cells from damage, and teenagers with poor nutrition are more likely to experience asthma symptoms.

Research indicates that four categories of food intake need to be controlled.

  • The first is a high-calorie diet, as excessive calorie intake can lead to obesity, increasing the likelihood of asthma attacks. Limiting calorie intake can reduce inflammation and prevent asthma attacks.
  • The second category includes foods that may cause allergies, such as peanuts, milk, eggs, etc. About 2% of adults are allergic to different foods, which can trigger allergic reactions and lead to asthma attacks.
  • The third category includes foods containing nitrites, such as seasonings, wine, beer, etc. Nitrites may stimulate lung tissue and trigger asthma symptoms.
  • The fourth category includes foods containing trans fats and omega-6 fatty acids, such as margarine and processed foods.

Although research on which foods can reduce asthma attacks is not yet clear, there is some consensus recommending the intake of three types of foods to prevent asthma.

  • The first is vegetables and fruits, such as carrots, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, etc., which help maintain lung function in children with asthma.
  • The second is foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, trout, sardines, etc., which can improve asthma symptoms.
  • The third is foods rich in vitamin D, such as salmon, fortified juices, etc., which can reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.

In addition, the following principles should be followed in diet:

  • After children play vigorously and sweat a lot, they should not immediately enter an air-conditioned room or drink cold beverages. Instead, wipe off sweat with a towel, drink some warm water, take a short rest, and then enjoy the air conditioning.
  • Try to avoid letting children consume too many cold drinks. Consuming large amounts of cold drinks in summer may trigger asthma attacks.
  • A balanced diet is key, avoid eating snacks, beverages, fast food, and foods such as bread containing flavors. Drink plenty of water to keep the airways moist.
  • The effects of probiotics may be overstated. For children with asthma, taking probiotics may have limited effects, but it is not harmful.

While no specific diet can eliminate asthma symptoms, maintaining a healthy weight, balanced diet, and avoiding foods known to trigger asthma can improve your symptoms and overall health.
